Boundaries

As established in 1847 the Diocese of Maitland consisted of the Borough of Maitland only. By Papal Brief of April 13, 1866, it was very much extended, and by Papal Brief of May 10, 1887, it was reduced. By a further Papal Brief of 1965 it was again slightly extended then reduced again to its present limits. From Catherine Hill Bay on the shore of the South Pacific Ocean at the southern boundary of City of Lake Macquarie, and bounded thence by that boundary and the western boundary of that City generally westerly and northerly to the City of Greater Cessnock; by the southern and western boundaries of the same and the southern and western boundaries of Singleton Shire generally westerly and northerly to the Great Dividing Range to Mt Coricudgy; thence by the Great Dividing Range northerly to meet the Liverpool Range; following that range to Ardglen thence to Mount Temi; easterly to Princess Pinnacle; then north easterly to Graeme; south easterly to Mt Gibraltar; south easterly to Vincent's Lookout; thence easterly to Diamond Head on the shores of the South Pacific Ocean.
