Boundaries

The Diocese comprises the territory of that portion of North Queensland which is bounded on the north and east by the ocean, including the Torres Strait Islands, on the south by the State parish boundaries adjacent to South Latitude 18.25 degrees from the East Coast to the Northern Territory, and on the west by the Northern Territory. The territory was detached from the Diocese of Brisbane on January 30, 1877, as the Vicariate Apostolic of Queensland; its name was changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Cooktown on May 10, 1887; it was elevated to a Diocese with the title of Cairns on July 8, 1941. Area: 377,000 sq km.
